OfSTED Inspection 2005

OFSTED Gives One of England’s Smallest Schools Top Marks Again !

Weston Lullingfields C of E Primary School is “Outstanding”!

7 November 2005

The Governors of Weston Lullingfields C of E Primary School near Shrewsbury, one of the smallest schools in the country, are delighted to have received the outstanding Report of the recent inspection carried out by OFSTED.  The Report states that “This is a good school.  It has many strengths, including some outstanding features, and no significant weaknesses.”

The Headteacher ,Alan Parkhurst  comments , “I am very proud of the staff and children at the school who have worked so hard to get this brilliant result.”

The Head says , “maintaining the excellent standards recognised in the last OFSTED inspection was hard work , but satisfyingly the report highlights the “good improvement since the previous inspection and the school’s searching and realistic self-appraisal show it has a very good capacity for further improvement.”

One of the major features of the new OFSTED regime is its reliance on the accuracy of the school’s own self evaluation of its performance. The Inspector stated “Very good self-evaluation is but one positive feature of the good leadership and management of the school.”

Small is best in the case of Weston Lullingfields. “The care, guidance and support of pupils is outstanding. The school fully exploits the benefits of its small size and favourable staff to pupil ratio to keep a very close watch on pupil’s personal and academic development”. Mr Parkhurst says “we try to create a friendly and supportive atmosphere, whilst at the same time challenging and supporting the pupils to achieve their best.” An issue with some small schools is their isolation, Weston Lullingfields more than overcomes this problem, as the report recognizes, “The school exploits well the benefits of its small size while effectively minimising potential disadvantages. It is enterprising in establishing excellent partnerships with external organisations, providers and other schools to broaden the expertise available to the school and to enrich pupils’ experiences.”

In summing up his view of the school the inspector concluded :

“…although the previous inspection did not require the school to make any specific improvements, there have been many beneficial developments.  The school is constantly seeking to improve itself. This search is based on thoughtful self-evaluation which accurately recognises the school’s strengths and the scope for further improvement. Parents’, pupils’ and governors’ views are carefully sought to help self-evaluation and planning for improvement. The school’s improvement plan had already identified those few relatively minor matters where this inspection found room for improvement.”

Headteacher Alan Parkhurst commented that “this second excellent OFSTED report  in just over four years further strengthens the school’s ability to continue its’ constant efforts to provide the best possible education for all its pupils regardless of their social background or academic ability. The school has a very positive future”. As well as receiving this glowing report from OFSTED the School has recently achieved Healthy School Status and hopes to be one of the first schools in Britain to be awarded UNICEF’s Children’s Rights Respecting School Award.
