School receives UNICEF Award 2005School first in West Midlands to receive UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award6 December 2005 Following on from being judged “outstanding” by OfSTED a few weeks ago Weston Lullingfields, one of the country’s smallest and most successful schools has now become one of only six schools in the United Kingdom to have gained a UNICEF Rights Respecting School Award. Liz Nicholson, Shropshire County Council's Corporate Director for Children and Young People's Services, said: "Congratulations to everyone at Weston Lullingfields Primary School on winning this unique award. The school is working on a number of "healthy school" initiatives and has put a lot of work into developing citizenship in particular. In a recent Ofsted inspection the standard the school achieved in the development of Personal ,Social and Health education was classed as outstanding. This accolade from UNICEF consolidates this achievement and shows just how well they have tackled international citizenship. Well done Weston Lullingfields!" This award was piloted in the West Midlands by Weston Lullingfields. It is designed to recognise schools that have fully integrated the United Nations Convention on the Rights of The Child into their daily practice. It recognises schools that take seriously the concepts of childrens’ rights and responsibilities involving children in decision-making, giving them opportunities to make their views known and to respect those views when they are given. The Headteacher, Mr Alan Parkhurst, said “ I am extremely proud that our small school , is the first school in the West Midlands to gain this prestigious National Award, and the first school in the country to gain the Award independently”. Alan said “ following on from our outstanding OfSTED Inspection this is further confirmation, if it was needed, that small schools do deliver a rich, varied, broad and balanced curriculum ensuring that though isolated geographically, educationally we remain at the forefront of curriculum delivery”. “I thoroughly recommend all schools applying for this Award as it embeds existing good practice with regards to PSHE and Citizenship and although the inspection and accreditation process is through UNICEF through it’s Education Officers is very supportive and their practical involvement gives an added external dimension to PSHE”.
