UNICEF Rights Respecting School AwardWeston Lullingfields CE Primary School has been awarded Level 1 of the prestigious Rights Respecting School Award and is the latest UK school to win recognition from UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund. ‘We decided to join forces with UNICEF’s Rights Respecting School Initiative to put the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the very heart of our school’s ethos,’ said Mrs Pam Edwards. The Level 1 award recognises the efforts of schools to mainstream the UNCRC through every level of school life. Apart from teaching pupils about the Convention’s articles, both teachers and pupils must understand the responsibilities placed on all those who work for the benefit of children, including the Government, teachers, parents and carers. Children also learn that having rights carries responsibilities. For example, under the Convention, all children have the right to an education but it is up to the children themselves to make the most of their opportunities. Schools who enter for the award report a considerable improvement in pupil behaviour, attendance and performance. Positive feedback from both pupils and staff suggests that the school environment becomes a happier place when all are aware of the rights and responsibilities. Having achieved Level 1 of the Rights Respecting School Award, Weston Lullingfields CE Primary School is working towards Level 2 which seeks to ensure that the UNCRC is included in all aspects of the school’s planning and policies. ‘We’ve begun to notice a real difference in the morale of both pupils and teachers,’ said (staff member). ‘Our school is now a much more positive and happy experience for all and we are committed to continuing to embed the principles of the UNCRC into every aspect of school life.’ ‘We are delighted that Weston Lullingfields CE Primary School has achieved Level 1 of the Rights Respecting School Award,’ said Heather Jarvis, UNICEF UK Head of Education. ‘Studies show us that schools that foster rights and responsibilities notice a real impact on morale, behaviour and attainment.’ The Rights Respecting Schools Initiative, set up by UNICEF UK, is being piloted in over 30 UK schools. It has been established to increase awareness of the UNCRC which establishes enduring ethical principle and international standards of behaviour towards children. The convention has been ratified by all countries bar two – Somalia and the USA. The UNCRC guides UNICEF’s work and is also the backbone of the Millennium Development Goals which aim to improve the lives of children around the world by 2015. The UK Government signed up to the UNCRC in 1991 and has to report on progress every five years.
